Psychotherapy Services Offered

What we do for ourselves dies with us,

what we do for others and the world

is and remains immortal.
Albert Pine

My theoretical beliefs are rooted both within an insight-oriented relational psychotherapy framework and a Buddhist's view of human nature as inherently healthy and interconnected.

Insight-oriented Relational Psychotherapy is a psychological treatment modality that involves talking with the therapist to gain an understanding and improvement of individual and interpersonal difficulties. I work rather interactively and will make observations with the goal of enabling my client to make the changes he/she sought in treatment. By means of discussion with the therapist as well as the use of mindfulness-based strategies to work with emotions and their expression in the body, symptoms and relationship difficulties can improve over time.  An understanding is gained of the way that an individual's developmental history, trauma, loss and other life transitions have affected the person and his or her relationships.

Your first session will be a consultation during which we begin to develop a mutual understanding of the difficulties/issues that brought you to seek therapy, and we gain a sense of whether my expertise and interpersonal style are a "good match" to your needs (this is the single most important predictor of successful treatment). Depending on the outcome of this assessment we may then agree that a referral to a different type of therapist may be more appropriate or we may discuss frequency of therapy appointments, fees and any additional questions you may have.

Although I have worked with a broad range of issues, the current focus of my therapeutic work is on the following issues:

  • Relational Issues

  • Immigration and Acculturation Issues

  • Medical Crisis

  • Gays and Lesbians Issues

  • Trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

  • Separation and Individualization

  • Loss and Grief

  • Spirituality

  • Eating Disorders

  • Mood Disorders

  •  The following services are provided in English and Italian:

  • Brief and Long-Term Individual Psychotherapy for Adults

  • Consultation to Couples (please note this is a rather structured short term modality to assess needs and interpersonal communication styles, which typically spans the course of 3-4 sessions and terminates with a set of recommendations. If long term treatment is required, you will be provided with a referral to a practitioner who specializes in long-term couples' work)

  • Sessions over Skype (under specific and exceptional circumstances I will provide sessions via Skype to clients already in on-going therapy and only on a self-pay basis as this modality is not allowed under insurance policies. Circumstances include when a client may be away for an extended period of time due to a trip, work, family or personal emergency, medical illness, etc. This possibility is discussed on a case by case basis).
